I
heard the bullets fly by before I heard the report of the gunfire. They slapped
into the wall behind me shattering the plaster from the boards that tried so
hard to hold on. My mind shifted into battle mode smoothly because of being in
so many fire fights before. Everything seems to move in slow motion when a gun
battle brakes out. Pop, Pop, Pop! zinngggg, crack the sounds came at the
same time. Dust and rock splashed like a liquid as bullets hit the wall giving
me cover. I raised my AK over the wall without looking and fired in the
direction of the sound of the gun shooting at me. A few burst would be enough
and I jerked the gun back down as three bullets chased it from the shooters gun.
I knew I was pinned down and needed to get out from where I was. My mission was
to get a picture of a map that was in the building across the street and that
was all that mattered to me. I had no great desire to kill the person shooting
at me. I was on his land. It was his right to kill me, if he could. As I lay
behind the short, waist high wall, taking cover I realized I could hear the
sound of shoes hitting the gravel on the street just in front of the bricks I
leaned against. The shooter was rushing my position in hopes of taking me off
guard by his aggressive arrogant attack. I had been in too many gun battles to
not know that this was a predictable tactic used by untrained soldiers. For some
reason many men in life threatening battle conditions will think they can roll
the dice and do the bizarrely dangerous, thinking that it is so unpredictable it
will somehow make it all work out. Most die when taking this approach to battle.
I jerked my head and gun over the wall looking and pointing it in the direction
of the sound of the running shoes on the gravel. Since he was not shooting cover
fire at me I knew he thought he was quietly sneaking up on me. I had the
advantage of experience. The memory of the Old Man telling me "No Wasted Moves
Makes Time Stand Still" flashed in my mind. It all slowed down again. The speed
at which I raised above the wall caught him in the sites of my gun before he
could raise his gun for protection. He had wasted moves and time was moving
faster than he could grasp what was happening. In a micro second we stared into
each others eyes communicating almost spiritually our agreement to the finality
of the situation. His eyes filled with fear and mine filled with resolve. He
knew his gamble had failed and I could see the disappointment come over him as I
pulled off a quick burst from my gun.
The
Old man was right. The
map was there and I made a lot of money gettting the pics of it. I was cursed
with a warrers heart so memories of the gun battle never came to
mind.
The path can be foun . I know what "makes time stand still" and never
doubted I would survive the fight.
I
left $25,000 in that building . It is yours if you can find it.
Sadam never knew
he would dig holes for me to hide in.
